CARES Act

Recent laws effective April 1, 2020.

Paycheck Protection Program

For businesses under 500 employees:
  • $349 billion in loans to help with payroll costs
  • Businesses can borrow up to 2.5 times their average payroll costs (up to $10 million)
  • Interest rate is capped at 1%
  • Loan payments are deferred for six months
  • Loan can be used for interest on mortgages, rent and utilities
  • Loans may be fully forgiven if 75% or more is used for payroll or to restore recently laid off employees


SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans

For businesses under 500 employees:
  • Removes the federally declared disaster requirement
  • Businesses in all states and U.S. territories can borrow up to $2 million
  • Interest rates are 3.75% for businesses and 2.75% for non-profit organizations
  • Businesses may receive up to a $10,000 advance of a loan
  • Apply at https://covid19relief.sba.gov/

Emergency Paid Sick Leave (EPSL)

For businesses over 50 employees:
  • Employers must provide up to two weeks (80 hours, or a part-time employee's two-week equivalent) of paid sick leave
  • Sick leave payouts are either 100% or two-thirds of the total hourly wage based on guidelines set forth, which includes required quarantines and illness due to COVID-19
  • Maximum sick leave payout is $511 daily and a total of $5,110 per employee
  • This paid sick leave is in addition to any vacation or sick leave provided by the business
  • EPSL leave is reimbursed to businesses through payroll taxes. If those amounts are not sufficient then businesses can request an expedited advance from the IRS

Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act (EFMLA)
For business with over 50 employees:
  • Allows employees caring for a child whose school or place of care is closed (or child care provider is unavailable) due to COVID-19 to take paid leave under FMLA.
  • Employees can take up to 12 weeks of paid sick leave and expanded family and medical leave paid at two-thirds their existing wage up to $200 daily and $12,000 total.
  • Employees have to have been employed at least 30 days proper to their leave request to be eligible for EFMLA.
  • EFMLA leave is reimbursed to businesses through payroll taxes. If those amounts are not sufficient, then businesses can request an expedited advance from the IRS.


Business Tax Breaks
For businesses with under 500 employees:
  • Employers whose operations were fully or partially suspended due to a shutdown order.
  • Employers whose gross revenue declined by more than 50% are eligible for a refundable tax credit.
  • Tax credit will apply to wages paid to workers covering March 13, 2020 to December 31, 2020.
  • Tax credit will be taken from payroll taxes due and will be capped at $10,000 per business


Don't Delay

CARES Loan funds are expected to go quickly. States and federal government might pass more relief.

  • Reduce Clutter. Remove things that get washed often. Mount information on the walls where possible.
  • Vertical vs. Horizontal branding
  • Triple Sheeting: Increases the clean feel and sanitation, according to Linenmaster's "Triple Sheeting Demonstration"

            1. Add bottom sheet
            2. Add middle sheet
            3. Add filling
  • Provide breakfast in bed
  • Remove baseboards
  • Reduce the number of items you need to clean
  • Avoid early 90s decor


Clean items like:
  • Remote controls
  • Keys and key chains
  • Light switches
  • Door handles
  • Toilet handles

5 Tips for Campgrounds

  • Pay close attention to your social media
  • Be transparent with your guests and overshare
  • Make sure your messaging is consistent
  • Make sure your staff knows what's open and closed in your area
  • Don't stop your regular marketing efforts

  • Reach out to local hospitals and universities
  • Call larger hotels in your area
  • Long term rentals
  • Contact property insurance
  • Check on mortgage freezes
  • Apply for CARES relief
  • Have a website banner that explains how you're keeping your guests safe and clean (COVID-19 communication)
